IMLS and Heritage Preservation Announce $814,060 in Grants to 156 Museums
Nationwide for Conservation of Museum Resources
Washington, DC-The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), and
Heritage Preservation, have awarded 156 grants totaling $814,060 to museums
across the country. Conservation Assessment Program (CAP) grants enable
museums, from art to zoo, to conduct essential conservation assessments of
their sites and collections. CAP grants help museums establish conservation
goals to ensure their holdings will be available to the public for years to
come.
IMLS funds the CAP grant program and Heritage Preservation administers it.
Grants support a two-day visit by conservation professionals who review the
museums' collections and environment. This year, conservation assessors
will provide professional advice on collections ranging from botanical
specimens to historic automobiles to rock art.
Among the varied museums funded this year are Babe Ruth's Birthplace in
Baltimore, the Alutiiq Archeological Museum in Kodiak, Alaska, and the
Aquarena Center, a nature preserve in San Marcos, Texas. (For a complete
list of grant awards, see the attached.)
The Babe Ruth Birthplace and Museum is the only birthplace of an athlete
listed as a National Historic Site. The museum's mission is to portray the
factual and legendary aspects of George Herman "Babe" Ruth, both as a
baseball player and as a national folk hero, through its collection of
artifacts and historical documents.
The Alutiiq Museum preserves the prehistoric and historic tradition of the
Alutiiq people--descendants of Pacific Eskimos. Alutiiq Artifacts, a
collection of archaeological, ethnological, and archival materials, date
back to 5,000 BCE.
Southwest Texas State University purchased Aquarena Springs in 1994,
converting the former theme park to a nature preserve. The 90-acre
acquisition has enabled SWT to preserve the ecologically fragile springs,
critical habitat to five endangered species, for the state while creating
lab and research possibilities for the university. The grant will be used
to assess their historical buildings and collections.
"I congratulate the museums receiving CAP awards," said Beverly Sheppard,
Acting Director of IMLS. "The activities they are pursuing today to care
for their collections will help to ensure that our children will be able to
use these resources tomorrow to learn about science, history and art. This
is a first-rate example of the benefits of a public-private partnership."
Heritage Preservation's Larry Reger said, "Heritage Preservation commends
these museums for making the commitment to better care for their collections
and ensuring they will be available for future generations. As CAP
celebrates its 10th anniversary in 2000, we look forward to working with
them as they implement their CAP recommendations."
