I'm certainly no expert in this, but I found that having a PhD was an
*incredible* problem in my recent job search. I'm not sure why this is
(perhaps perceived as 'too' intellectual) but my feeling is that if I had
done internships/volunteer work at a museum and worked my way up (even with
only a BA) I would probably be better off, career-wise, in museums. Having
said this, I get to teach in universities, and that improves the cachet of
one's specialty, which *might* ultimately lead to a better museum position,
but this 'ultimately' seems like a long one, so I'll defer to the more
experienced out there...
