In Big Stone Gap, Virginia, is the John Fox, Jr. Museum. He wrote "Summer
Nights" and "Little Shepherd of Kingdom Come". Perhaps not as well known as
the others mentioned in this thread but he does fit the bill. In case anyone
is wondering, it's in the  southwest part of the state. No URL but the phone
