As a teenager in an outlying town, we went to San Antonio for fun quite
often.
The Institute for Texan Cultures is a really neat museum in a building that
is shaped like an upside-down chunky bar (that dates it to the late 1960s,
doesn't it?). It's all about Texas and explodes the myth that we are all
cowboys (sorry).
The Marion Koogler McNay Art Museum is an incredibly beautiful museum on
incredibly beautiful grounds. And the artwork is good.
The Witte Museum is always fun and includes everything from art to fossils.
The San Antonio Museum of Art will still have the Scythian gold exhibit
through the end of January, plus it is located in the old Lone Star
brewery. As a kid, we loved riding in the glass elevators.
These museums are all located fairly close to each other (most just off of
Broadway) so it would be fairly easy to combine a few.
Needless to say, there are many other cool things to do. If your friend
walks, try the NPS Mission tour starting at the Alamo and moving south to a
series of really lovely missions and grounds (usually you can only walk to
a few unless you are a hardcore walker. You'll need a car to get to the
outlying ones.)

(Re: the reply from Robert Tabak. I've enjoyed learning that there is a
Balch Institute. I think I'll start referring to myself as The
Baulch. BTW, the original spelling was Bwlch...be grateful for the vowel
change.)
