AAM Government Affairs is sending out the following alert to museum
advocates.

The United States Postal Service may issue a stamp honoring museums!
Its "Celebrate the Century" series recognizes 15 defining events,
movements, inventions, etc. of each decade of the 20th century. (For
example, there's a "First Flight" stamp for the 1910s, "Stock Market
Crash" for the 1920s, and "FDR's New Deal" for the 1930s.) It is now
deciding on the stamps honoring the 1990s, based on input from the
public. One of the stamps on the ballot is entitled "Museum Attendance"
reflecting this decade's phenomenal growth in museums' popularity. The
ballot states:

                                "American museums are drawing younger
and bigger crowds with major exhibitions, state-of-the art interactive
displays, and after-hours cultural attractions. By the late 1990s,
museum attendance nationwide exceeded 850 million visits per year."

"Museum Attendance" is one of six possible voting options in the
"Lifestyle" category - you can choose up to three. Ballots must be
postmarked no later than May 31, 1999 - pick them up at your post office
-- or you can vote on-line at http://www.usps.gov/ctc/welcome.htm. So
vote for the museum stamp! And tell your friends.

In addition to the ballots, the Postal Service is offering free
educational kits for over 200,000 classrooms (also downloadable from the
Web) including a teacher's guide, lesson plan, etc., about museums.

AAM Government and Public Affairs worked with the USPS providing
them with background information for "Celebrate the Century." Now we
just need to get out the vote! If you have any questions, please
contact us at 202/289-9125.
