Lisa,
I agree with Suzanne Quigley about the Edgerton photographs, and will check
with a colleague in our museum, Joyce Bedi, who knew Doc E. more recently
than I, and I believe is doing her dissertation on his work. She should know
the situation well. I'll report back when I find out.
Years ago someone wanted a copy print of one of our Edgerton photographs. I
told the inquirer we could supply it only if Edgerton agreed. To my
surprise, he wrote to me and said, go ahead, he had no objections and didn't
want a fee. That, however, was before his photographs began being sold by
galleries as works of art, the prices went up, and probably his copyrights
began to be enforced.
I can't resist an anecdote. During his last visit to our museum many moons
ago, I was showing him around, and we chanced upon a teen-aged girl who was
playing with our interactive electronic flash display. He reached into his
pocket and handed her a postcard of one of his greatest hits--probably a
milk-drop shot. Since she looked a bit alarmed at this impish geezer handing
her a picture postcard, I hastily introduced him. I said, "This is Dr.
Edgerton. He invented electronic flash." She nearly fell over and said
"Wow!"
