Position: Curator of Special Collections
Description: Manages a diverse collection of formats, including manuscripts,
rare books, maps, images, oral history materials, and the University archives.
(The main subunit of the department - the Mississippi Valley Collection - is a
repository for regional/local history/culture focused on the Lower Mississippi
Valley, and has strong holdings in such research areas as the
Civil War, African-American history, and Southern history.) Works closely
with
teaching faculty and with researchers (both scholarly and
non-scholarly) from around the world. Supervises a staff of
4-6 FTE employees. Follows Libraries faculty tenure/promotion
policies/procedures.
Qualifications:
Minimum: ALA-accredited MLS
Experience working with rare books, manuscripts, archival
materials
Potential for contributions in regional studies
Preferred: Graduate work or degree in related subject field
Experience in publications and editing
Undergraduate level teaching experience
Participation in local/regional historical societies
Demonstrated knowledge of archival/preservation issues
Ability to interact with diverse users
Commitment to growth/increased visibility of Special
Collections Department
Supervisory experience in library setting
Rank and Salary:
Assistant Professor (tenure-track), 12 month appointment
Salary and rank dependent upon experience and qualifications;
beginning at a minimum of $24,000.
Benefits: Includes: 24 days vacation/12 days of sick leave per year

The University is located in the largest urban center in the state of
Tennessee and Mid-South region. Enrollment in the University is approximately
20,000 students. The University of Memphis Libraries (McWherter Library -
occupied in September 1994 - and 5 branches) have 28 faculty and 78 support
staff.
