One good reason (IMHO) to allow job postings is that we can all learn something
about how others operate from reading the announcements. In fact, there have
been some pretty interesting discussions about how to apportion work --
especially in a small institution -- instigated by job listings.
I wouldn't look to the list for potential employees, and I don't see any
benefit to reading lots of resumes when I don't have any positions to fill.
And, if I did have a position, I would be much more interested in someone
proactive enough to apply on their own.
If you want to get potential employers' attention through the list, I would
suggest participating thoughtfully in the discussion.
