Position Available: Photo-Archivist
The Nantucket Historial Association (NHA) is a dynamic organization that
manages twenty-four museums, historic houses, and sites on Nantucket Island,
located 30 miles southeast of Cape Cod, Massachusetts. It is the principal
repository of Nantucket history, with extensive archives and collections of
art
and artifacts that broadly illustrate Nantucket’s past. The library holds
5,000
volumes, manuscripts, rare books, maps, and photographs spanning three
centuries. The photo-archivist is one of a staff of three, supervised by the
library director.
Responsibilities include: managing the photo archives, which include 45,000
images in various formats; cataloging and preserving photographic collections;
processing requests for the reproduction of images; responding to research
queries; supervising and recruiting volunteers and interns; and assisting
staff
in the creation of programs, publications, and exhibitions that utilize
photographic materials. The photo-archivist is also responsible for adding
records to a digital image archive and maintaining the library’s databases.
Applicants must be familiar with photographic materials and processes and be
comfortable interacting with the public, including school children. Strong
computer skills are vital. Candidates must be able to lift heavy boxes.
Candidates should be enterprising, energetic, and self-directed. Prior
experience in a museum setting is beneficial. The NHA is in the process of
constructing a new library; it is an exciting time to be a part of the
association.
Pay is competitive, with excellent benefits, including two weeks vacation plus
thirteen holidays; health and dental plan. Send resume and references to Betsy
Lowenstein, Library Director, Nantucket Historical Association, P.O. Box 1016,
Nantucket, MA 02554. Tel.: (508) 228-1894; Fax: (508) 228-5618. Deadline: June
1, 1999.
