Fellows are conducting independent research which they have proposed. They have advisors not supervisors. Their work is independent and is their own intellectual property and in no way can they be required to preform a service or product. Smithsonian fellows are not in any way considered like employees.
Research Associates and Collaborators (these are honorary titles), as well, are independent and have a sponsor that is more of a host. These people are in no way paid as research consultants.
