Sometimes a advanced degree only means you were financially able to stay
out of the real world for another 2-4 years. A degree at any level is not
an indicator of true knowledge or ability. It could just mean you knew how
to play the academic game. Believe me I know several people with BA's and
MA's who know very little about their chosen field and even less about how
to apply it in the real world. I even know a Ph.D or two that is totally
inept at real work. Often a person having spent the majority of their life
in acadamia is suited only for academia and not necessarily in a teaching
capacity.
A person graduating in any field should be able to find a full-time job,
with benefits and room for advancement. The museum field is no exception.
I'm saying they have to be a curator or director, but certainly not an
administrative assistant. I think museums just take advantage of the fact
that most museum professionls have a genuine love for the field and will
work for almost any wage, if not for free. I for one have worked for free
and minimum wage. I have a BA in public aministration, a BA in History/Art
History and a Post BA Certificate in Museum Studies. I can't even find a
full-time job as a janitor at a museum. I can not afford to go back to
school right now. Don't I deserve to work in my chosen in the mean time?
