Apologies for cross-postings
Members of the list who live in the Chicago area might be interested in this
special program at Shedd Aquarium. Let me know if you'd like a staff ticket
at $5.00 instead of the regular $12 fee.

Come to Shedd Aquarium on Oceans Day, June 8, at 7 p.m., and you might get a
close-up look at a giant squid. You will hear the latest about the search
for this mysterious denizen of the deep from Dr. Clyde Roper of the
Smithsonian Institution. In 1997, Dr. Roper led a team of researchers on a
daring expedition to the mile-deep Kaikoura Canyon, near New Zealand, to
find giant squid, using a high-tech submersible vehicle equipped with a
video camera. He returned to the site early this year to continue his search
for this elusive, 60-foot-long creature, which is known only from carcasses
washed onto beaches or tangled in fishing nets.
Dr. Roper will share his latest discoveries in a fascinating lecture
and slide presentation in Phelps Auditorium. Following the talk, join this
world-famous teuthologist - or squid sleuth - for a reception and light
refreshments.
