Collections Manager & Curator of Cultural Properties
Recognized internationally for its education programs, architecture,

The Collections Manager and Curator of Cultural Properties is responsible
for the installation, use/display, cataloguing, storage, conservation,
disposal/deaccession, loan, security and reproduction of Cranbrook’s
cultural properties. Cranbrook’s cultural properties include the
Community’s collection of fine arts, and historical and architecturally
significant building and landscape elements and furnishings. This
individual serves as the curator of Cranbrook House, the Albert
Kahn-designed historic manor home of Cranbrook’s founders, provides docent
training and serves as a staff resource to volunteer groups devoted to the
preservation of Cranbrook. This position is not responsible for the Art
Museum’s and Institute of Science’s permanent collections, the collection of
the Archives or the campus inventory of furniture, fixtures and equipment.
This individual also provides consultation on the restoration of Cranbrook’s
buildings and landscape. Reporting to the Associate Vice President of the
Cranbrook Educational Community, the Collection Manager and Curator of
Cultural Properties works with other collection managers and curators in
developing educational programs, exhibitions and maintaining a campus-wide
collections database.
Successful candidates will have a minimum of three years experience working
with collections and knowledge of conservation, restoration, preservation
and maintenance of art objects displayed outdoors as well as indoors. A
master’s degree in art history, museum studies or related field is required;
experience/background in decorative arts and architectural history is highly
desirable. In addition to knowledge and skill in accepted museum
registration practices, including record control and database management,
candidates should demonstrate effective art handling techniques and have
experience in risk management practices and standards. The ability to work
collaboratively with a wide range of constituencies and excellent
communications skills are essential.
