     Marissa,
The Florida Museum of Natural History used to have a travelling
exhibit titled "Fort Mose: America's Black Fortress of Freedom" which
you might enquire about. To quote Deagan and MacMahon's book on the
subject, "In 1738, when more than 100 African fugitives had arrived in
St. Augustine, the Spanish established the fort and town Gracia Real
de Santa Teresa de Mose, the first legally-sanctioned free black town
in what is now the Untied States."
