Your points about volunteering leading to a job is interesting to me. I
voluntarily started up a museum, working more than full time for free for 18
months as Executive Director, when I finally told the Board of Directors it
was time to pay me, they paid me a minimal salary and then decided it was
time to do a National Search for my position. I have subsequently left my
position as the writing was on the wall and it was not a nice picture. I
agree that volunteering, while giving one valuable experience, does not lead
to a consequential position in the management area. However I have seen
volunteers move successfully into being birthday party coordinators or to
being a board member, but not much more than that.
