A stick, a cork, a rubber band, a small container of liquid nitrogen, a small
box-shaped mold that will fit into it, some mercury.  I still remember the
demonstrator who came to our chemistry class and right in front of us pounded
a (frozen) rubber band into a cork with a mercury hammer (head made in the
mold) to demonstrate the uses of temperature extremes.
