The Archeology & Ethnography Program of the National Park Service
(NPS) invites you to submit a 1999 Native American Graves Protection
and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) grant application.
NAGPRA became law on November 16, 1990. The Act addresses the rights
of lineal descendants, Indian tribes, Alaska Native villages and
corporations, and Native Hawaiian organizations to certain Native
American human remains and cultural items with which they are
affiliated. Section 10 of the statute authorizes the Secretary of the
Interior to make grants to museums and to Indian tribes, Alaska Native
villages and corporations, and Native Hawaiian organizations for the
purposes of assisting in the inventory, documentation, and
repatriation of Native American human remains and cultural items.
Grants will be awarded in two categories: Documentation Awards and
Repatriation Awards. Documentation Awards can range from $5,000 to
$75,000. Repatriation Awards may vary up to $15,000. Application
deadlines are as follows:
NAGPRA GRANTS FOR MUSEUMS:
Documentation Awards -- applications must be postmarked by DECEMBER 4,
1998.
Repatriation Awards -- applications will be considered as they are
submitted. There is no specific deadline.
NAGPRA GRANTS FOR INDIAN TRIBES, ALASKA NATIVE VILLAGES AND
CORPORATIONS, AND NATIVE HAWAIIAN ORGANIZATIONS:
Documentation Awards -- applications must be postmarked by NOVEMBER
20, 1998.
Repatriation Awards -- applications will be considered as they are
submitted. There is no specific deadline.
Grant guidelines are available on the World Wide Web at
http://www.cr.nps.gov/aad/nagpra.htm. If you have any questions or
would like a hard copy of the grant guidelines mailed to you, please
contact me. Thanks!
