I had tourists tell me last week that they managed to get tickets on a
Tuesday by getting in line around 6:30 a.m.  I'm sure the weekends are
worse.

Tell your friends good luck.  Also, they may ask if their hotel can
provide them tickets.  Many local hotels are paying people to wait in
line in order to provide tickets to their guests.
