that explores practical issues around mounting a major blockbuster
exhibition.
Join us for this unique opportunity to share the experiences gained
by Royal British Columbia Museum staff in the creation and management
of the acclaimed exhibition, "Leonardo da Vinci: Scientist, Inventor,
Artist." This workshop takes you behind the scenes at the Royal
British Columbia Museum to view the exhibit, and brings Museum staff
and colleagues together in a seminar format to discuss the key
success factors and lessons learned from this major initiative.

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION:
This two-day workshop for museum managers, curators, and exhibition
specialists takes you behind the scenes at the Royal British Columbia
Museum to learn from the staff who developed and ran the six-month
blockbuster exhibition "Leonardo daVinci: Scientist, Inventor,
Artist." Museum staff will share their strategies, successes, and
stresses involved in:
o creating a business plan and funding strategy
o marketing and product development
o working with media and the hospitality industry
o connecting with communities
o involving staff and balancing other commitments
o working with external curators
o managing crowds and security
o building a legacy
Resource People: Pauline Rafferty, Director of Customer and Corporate
Services of the Royal British Columbia Museum, and Director Responsible for
the Leonardo Exhibition, will be joined by staff members from the
Museum's program, design and marketing divisions
Dates: February 11 - 12, 1999
Fee: $250 (Canadian funds, non-credit only)
Location: Downtown Victoria at the historic St. Ann's Academy, with a
tour of the exhibit at the nearby Royal British Columbia Museum
Travel: Victoria is easily accessible by air or ferry from both
Vancouver and Seattle
Accommodation: Program staff are pleased to provide you with
on-campus and off-campus alternatives
DRAFT OUTLINE SUMMARY
This two-day workshop focuses on the key success factors for
developing and managing a blockbuster exhibit.
DAY 1: Thursday, February 11
MORNING
* Setting the Scene: how was the Museum positioned to host this
major blockbuster exhibit? Resource Person: Bill Barkley, CEO, sets
the scene
* Developing the Plan -- Resource People: Pauline Rafferty,
Director, Customer and Corporate Services, Director Responsible for
the Leonardo Exhibition, and Patrick Bruce, Financial services
manager
* Risk analysis
* Building the business plan
* Review of the blockbuster model, including funding analysis
* The planning framework for a 'blockbuster' exhibition
* Setting realistic expectations for visitation, revenues and
community benefit
* The elements of risk that the museum must anticipate
AFTERNOON
* The Marketing plan -- Resource People: Kathi Springer, Marketing
Contractor, and Chris Higgins, Media Relations Coordinator
* Working with the media; the hospitality industry as a supporter
* Building partnerships that benefit both museum and community
legacies, positive and negative
* Developing the Exhibition Resource Person: John Robertson, Chief,
Design Services
* The exhibit design and working with outside curators
