Regarding your inquiry about motion lamps, that is an accepted
term for them. However in many patent applications they were
more often described as "animated decorative lamps."

For a somewhat comprehensive study of the subject, refer to:

> Greetings!
> I'm seeking information on American antique lamps from the 20'-30's(?).
> I've been unable to determine the correct name for these lamps.
> Description: 12-16 in. ht. Approx. 6-8 in. diameter (cylindrical).
>
> These are motion lamps - I believe operated by the heat generated by the
> bulb.
> The moving cylinder inside the lamp contains a graphic - usually Currier &
> Ives style. As the cylinder rotates, the moire' pattern gives the
illusion
> of motion within the graphic. For example: waterfall - forest fire - or
old
> time locomotive.
> Can anyone tell me the formal name for these lamps, or where to find
