IMHO I think that you may find (here in the states) the "private" colleges
do something the "public" ones don't. The private colleges all try to
select students with a similar bent. For example you should expect a
graduate from MIT to be an individual contributor with strong quantitative
skills. Harvard produces people with that fit well into organizations with
a traditional structure. Williams seems to offer the chance to develop peer
leadership skills. Dartmouth's students are ecclectic and so on. The public
colleges don't have the option to select students that fit into "their"
mold.
