The American Federation of Arts
May 1999
Dear Colleague:
The American Federation of Arts is delighted to inform you that the 90th
anniversary edition of our 1999 Exhibitions Program catalogue is now
available. The illustrated publication describes the 47 exhibitions
organized (or co-organized) by the AFA to serve its member museums. The
catalogue underscores the AFA's enduring commitment to its original
mission, recounted on pages 4 and 5: that is, to enrich the public's
experience and understanding of art by organizing traveling exhibitions
and providing educational, professional, and technical support.
This year's catalogue presents a rich and diverse selection comprising a
wide range of mediums, artists, historical periods, and cultural
traditions, from ancient Egyptian portraiture and Chola bronzes to
Dégas, the painter of dancers. In some instances, the AFA has
collaborated with distinguished institutions in the United States (the
Gilcrease Museum, Tulsa, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and
the Peabody Essex Museum, Salem); in France (Musée d'Amiens); and in the
United Kingdom (The British Museum, the Dulwich Picture Gallery, and the
National Gallery of Scotland).
Colleagues from professional art museums only may receive a
complimentary copy by emailing us at [log in to unmask] or call AFA's
Department of Museum Services at 800/AFA-0270, ext. 39.
Sincerely,
John W. Nichols
Director of Museum Services
