Subject: Re: [MUSEUM-L] museum internships in the UK?
...
Good luck finding a paid internship. Paid museum internships
are about as rare to find in the UK as they are in the US.
Also, I would think if a UK museum had a paid internship that
they would give it to a UK student over a US student -- just my
opinion. You can certainly find other temporary jobs in the UK
to earn a few bucks, but don't count on a paid museum
internship.

From my experience, paid internships are much more
plentiful in the US than in the UK. There are a very,
very few positions here which are advertised as 'training'
positions; most graduate-entry positions are fully
fledged jobs.
As Patrick has said, jobs have to be offered first to EU
citizens. This theoretically goes for
all jobs, but in casual labour situations (such as pub work and
crop picking)
it is easier to break the law that when working in local
government.
One area where if you are qualified, right now you could easily
find a position, legally,
is nursing - we have a terrible shortage.
I wonder if the Millennium Skillshare scheme run by the Museums
and Galleries
commission could work in your favour here: this is a scheme for
people who have
volunteered for two years, or worked for four, to take a six
week placement in another institution. There is a webpage, but
I can't remember the url.
But if you are able to look for work here without needing to be
paid: look at costs, as well as institutions: living in London
is incredibly expensive - living in an area where the mines
closed down ten years ago isn't. For that reason, I wouldn't
encourage you to come to Surrey!
