Venues are available for the traveling exhibition "Main Street
Five-and-Dimes: The Architectural Heritage of S.H. Kress & Co." organized
by the National Building Museum, Washington, DC and sponsored by the Samuel
H. Kress Foundation.
This exhibition explores the design of Kress stores and their legacy in
downtowns across the United States. It traces the company’s architectural
heritage from its founding in 1896 through its demise in 1981 and on to the
abandonment, reuse and preservation of Kress store buildings today. The
exhibition features vintage photographs, historic artifacts and original
drawings and documents. When the exhibition opened at the National Building
Museum in 1997 it met with tremendous popular enthusiasm and critical
acclaim in the New York Times, Chicago Tribune and the Journal of American
History.
