Join us for this unique opportunity to share the experiences gained
by Royal British Columbia Museum staff in the creation and management
of the acclaimed exhibition, "Leonardo da Vinci: Scientist, Inventor,
Artist." This workshop takes you behind the scenes at the Royal
British Columbia Museum to view the exhibit, and brings Museum
staff and colleagues together in a seminar format to discuss the
key success factors and lessons learned from this major initiative.

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION:
This two-day workshop for museum managers, curators, and exhibition
specialists takes you behind the scenes at the Royal British Columbia
Museum to learn from the staff who developed and ran the six-month
blockbuster exhibition "Leonardo daVinci: Scientist, Inventor,
Artist." Museum staff will share their strategies, successes, and
stresses involved in:
o creating a business plan and funding strategy
o marketing and product development
o working with media and the hospitality industry
o connecting with communities
o involving staff and balancing other commitments
o working with external curators
o managing crowds and security
o building a legacy
You will work with a facilitator to analyze the key components for
success in undertaking a blockbuster
Resource People: Pauline Rafferty, Director of Customer and Corporate
Services of the Royal British Columbia Museum, will be joined by
staff members from the Museum's program, design and marketing
divisions
Dates: February 11 - 12, 1999
Please register by: January 18
Fee: $250 (non-credit only)
Location: Downtown Victoria at St. Ann's Academy with a tour of the
exhibit at the nearby Royal British Columbia Museum
Travel: Victoria is easily accessible by air
or ferry from both Vancouver and Seattle

on-campus and off-campus alternatives

DAY 1: Thursday, February 11
Morning:
- Setting the Scene: how was the Museum positioned to host this
major blockbuster exhibit?
- Developing the Plan
> risk analysis
> building the business plan
> review of the blockbuster model, including funding analysis
> the planning framework for a 'blockbuster' exhibition
> setting realistic expectations for visitation, revenues and
community benefit
> the elements of risk that the museum must anticipate
Afternoon :
> the Marketing plan
> working with the media; the hospitality industry as a supporter
> building partnerships that benefit both museum and community
legacies, positive and negative
- Developing the Exhibition
> the exhibit design and working with outside curators
> tour of the exhibit
- Optional dinner with group and resource people
DAY 2: Friday, February 12
Morning:
> product development in the gift shop
> linking with the community: Panel discussion
> sponsorship
> managing success: crowds, ticket challenges, coat check
Afternoon:
- Lessons From Leonardo
> the organizational impacts on staff, resources and functions
> the Legacy: ongoing expectations
