Although not directly related to your interests, there is an
excellent book by Wilhelmina F. Jashemski on the archaeology of
Roman gardens based on her excavations at Pompeii (THE GARDENS
OF POMPEII). Jashemski was also featured last year or this in
SMITHSONIAN MAGAZINE (reference probably available in Reader's
Guide to Periodical Lit. for 1993/4). Her conclusions relied
upon plaster casts of roots and plant impressions. Among other
things Jashemski argued that late Roman Republican gardens,
esp. in Southern Italy used plantings that conserved water
while early imperial gardens (benefitting from aqueducts) used
the highly stylized & artificial plantings that French writers
have identified as typically "Roman" (a la Versailles).
I attach some citations to Jashemski's work from the NY Public
Library Catalog. The subject terms may be of some use in
further research.
