Greetings colleagues:
I am in the process of renovating our Museum's artifact loan collection which
was established in the 1920's by a pair of very enterprising librarians and a dedicated group of WPA workers.
We loan our artifact-based kits to regional teachers, students, homeschoolers and the general public.
The department is divided into four categories: World Culture, History, Science
and Technology. I'm afraid that 70+ years of circulation is now taking its toll on
our collection.
I am very interested in hearing from other museum educators/curators about similar collections, obtaining good leads for collecting authentic (no tourist items PLEASE!)
non-USA objects/reproductions and educational materials/catalogs. Our World Culture section
is divided by continents and includes kits (by country)on the following topics: Arts & Crafts, Customs &
Beliefs, Education, Family Life,Geography and Popular Culture.
As this is a "newly" created museum education position, due to a museum-community college merger, I would
also be interested in hearing from any curators/special collections librarians or collections managers who
may hold a similar similar job. A sharing of job description info would be greatly appreciated!
Many thanks!
A. Mack
