POSITION DESCRIPTION
TITLE: Associate Registrar
REPORTS TO: Registrar
SALARY: $30,100 to $37,600, commensurate with experience

OFFICE OF SENATE CURATOR:
The Office of Senate Curator implements the policies and programs of
the United States Senate Commission on Art [USC 188b], which was
established in 1968 to accept, supervise, hold, place, and protect all
works of art, historical objects, and exhibits in the Senate wing of
the United States Capitol and in the Senate Office Buildings.
The office exercises supervisory responsibility for the Old Senate and
Old Supreme Court Chambers in the U.S. Capitol, compiles detailed
records of all works of art in the Senate's collection, and is
responsible for all loans to the Senate Leadership. The office also
protects and cares for these objects and, when appropriate, directs
conservation and restoration treatment by professional conservators.
The curator and staff suggest acquisitions, provide appropriate
exhibitions, engage in research of the historic collections of the
Senate, and develop publications for the general public
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES OF ASSOCIATE REGISTRAR:
assists with maintaining accurate records of acquisitions, accessions,
location, and all documentation of objects in the permanent
collection, as well as other active registration files;
responsible for cataloging and inventorying of the foreign gift
collection;
creates and controls the reproduction art collection;
assists with care, safety, and security of the permanent collection,
as well as objects on temporary exhibition;
responsible for photographing permanent collection for record keeping
purpose, and oversees documentation, organization, maintenance, and
rights and reproductions of photographic files of collection;
participates in short-and long-range planning of registration
activities;
supports all functions related to loans to and from the Senate; and
supports Curator and Collections Manager with research and
documentation of collections.
QUALIFICATIONS:
BA degree in American history, American studies, political science, or
art history;
graduate degree in the field(s) of art history, museum studies, or
American history;
minimum one year institutional experience in the museum field;
knowledge of museum registration concepts, principles, and practices
gained through advanced study and experience in a museum setting;
extensive training in the handling and examination of art objects;
proficiency with camera; and
general knowledge of museum related computer programs, such as File
Maker Pro, and experience with database management.
