Dear John Handley,
Thank you for the information regarding the National Gallery. I have contacted the Registration Department there who in turn faxed to me their very thorough rules for Copying Works of Art. This has been very helpful as our museum tries to determine our own policy.
Thank you again for your kind response to my request. Please feel free to contact me again if you have any other suggestions.

While visiting the National Gallery this last year, I noticed on a
couple of occasions that artists had set up their canvases in the
galleries and were painting with oils. Can't tell you much more than
that. Try contacting someone there.

We only allow pencils/dry media in the galleries. We are part of a
University, but so far there have been no complaints.
