Dear Listers - and Harry:
As some of you know, I manage The International Cultural Property
Protection Exposition each year on behalf of The International Committee
On Museum Security (ICMS) of ICOM - which is held in conjunction with
The National Conference On Cultural Property Protection sponsored by the
Smithsonian Institution and this year hosted by The Getty Trust 7-11
March 1999 in Los Angeles, CA. You can E Mail me for Registration
Information and I will forward your request to the proper person at the
Smithsonian.
Each year, I make a special effort to obtain one or more of the firms
which manufacture this so-called UV film as exhibitors at the Show. I
do so because this product fulfills the needs of cultural institutions
in, not only one, but two major ways:
1. (if you obtain the proper product - check on their
testing) it does fufill the function of reducing UV
light
2. the film also provides a certain level of security
for the building (depending upon the strength
of the window components) and reduces the
likelihood of artifact damage or personnel
injury due to flying glass from a storm (high
winds, flying branchs, etc.), and to a lesser
extent, from bomb blasts.
In the case of Historic Structures, this product can be installed on the
interior of existing glass surfaces without changing the window
structure (thereby assuring that the fenestration of the building
remains in its original state). Also check on the firm's guarantee for
the product and it's installation.
Kind Regards
Roger Wulff
