I think the need for references to be local depends on the job. When I was
job hunting, none of my out-of-town references were contacted by the
smaller organizations with which I had interviews. On the other hand, I
have been called as a reference for a student who worked for me. She has
since returned home to another country where she was being interviewed for
a position in a large government organization.
I guess it depends on how much budget the institution has for long distance
telephone calls!

1. How important is it to have local references when searching for a
job? I have recently moved and can list only one local reference on my
resume, but I have been doing temp work for three months with an
organization that might be beneficial to mention. Do you think I should
list my supervisor as a reference for professional character if nothing
else?
