Dear Listers:
I thought I would take advantage of this present discussion on the
management of museums (or lack thereof) to introduce a major mangement
philosophy to those of you who are not aware of it, and perhaps,
encourage its study and practice within the museum community.
Dr. W. Edwards Deming developed this management philosophy over the
years of his work in the American industrial sector and is generally
credited with the resurgence and growth of the Japanese industrial
economy after World War II. One of the highest honors in the Japanese
Corporate world is The Deming Prize.
Dr. Deming's philosophy is important in the management of any type of
organization - not so much for "enumerating a step-by-step course of
action" - but in encouraging individuals to think for themselves while
following these 14 philosopical points. For Dr. Deming's 14 points and
further information on this philosphy, please see:

Kind Regards
Roger Wulff
