Museum Technician (registrar / conservation technician): open to all
qualified persons
The Steamboat Bertrand Museum, located on DeSoto National Wildlife Refuge,
has a full time, permanent position available immediately; salary range is
$26,075 - $33,893 with full government benefits. The position is split
between registrar and object conservation duties, with other miscellaneous
tasks common to any small museum. DeSoto National Wildlife Refuge is part
of the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, a federal agency located between
Missouri Valley, Iowa and Blair, Nebraska, 30 miles north of Omaha, NE.
The Bertrand Museum houses a unique collection of artifacts; the
steamboat's cargo. The boat sank in the Missouri River, April 1, 1865 (at
3:00 pm!). A hundred years later, the waterlogged cargo was excavated from
its burial site in a cornfield. The assembledge represents a securely
dated time capsule of late Civil War era material.
For more information on the Steamboat Bertrand, images of the collection,
