It's a balancing act, isn't it? You need someone with managerial and
public relations skills who is appreciative of museum resources and
sensitive to the special mission of a museum. People who are too far
to one end or the other will not serve the museum well---and those in
the middle can still be mediocre and ineffective. The ideal person for
Blank Museum in 1998 may not be what Blank Museum needed in
1988 or will need in 2008. There's no cookbook recipe for success in
this field; each vacancy should be treated as a special case and filled
accordingly.
