I may not interpret your question as you intend or in the legalistic
way of the first response, but my personal feelings are that the
purpose of art museums for sure, as opposed to say natural history
museums, is to celebrate the genius of man. Therefore it is
imperative to give full credit to the artist creator, or, in the case
of copy cats, the artist that first inspired the painting with a
lesser recognition of the one who did the work.
