In response to both Jen and E.J. I would suggest that
many museums need staff with expertise in an area of
their collections or work. While we have hired
curators with Museum Studies degrees, that degree
hasn't been the sole factor in their selection. We
also looked at their academic training in areas of our
collections, undergraduate degrees, and "work"
experience as volunteers, interns, and in paid
positions. We can't afford to hire someone to manage
our collections who only knows "museum studies," we
need someone who also knows something about part of the
collection, too.
Jen's questions, IMHO, are the right ones to ask.
