Museums of the Future Seminar
University of Limerick
Limerick, Ireland
Tuesday, June 2nd, 1998
(Please note that the date has been
changed from May 19th to June 2nd)
Museums, cultural heritage centres and the like use computers to enhance
the visitor experience and to make information about the museum and
samples from the collection accessible world-wide via the Internet. The
new possibilities brought about by using computers in museums are still
under investigation and have recently led to some discussion as to what
constitutes a museum. The idea of the Museums of the Future Seminar is
to bring together people with different backgrounds - museum curators,
multimedia designers, architects, psychologists, ergonomists,
anthropologists, museum visitors of different categories etc. - to
discuss issues surrounding the use of IT in museums today and in the
future.
Topics will include: enhancing the user experience, who are museum IT
designed for?, what is the role of museums?, what is the role of
multimedia within specific exhibits?, the role of narrative vs.
game-type interfaces?, how should museum objects be packaged?, views on
exploratorium type centres, ergonomics of IT use in public spaces, the
concept of the 'virtual museum', reports on user experiences with museum
web sites etc.
The main aim of the seminar is to gauge interest, and identify people
and concerns to be followed up subsequently. The plan is just to start
the ball rolling, get inputs and views from people on different sides of
the debate, and share information and experiences, plus have some demos
of systems, or prototypes at least.
