Acetone, which you should be able to get from your
local pharmacist, or perhaps at a paint store, will
dissolve glues of the "airplane glue" variety. The
only problem will be the ink in which the specimen
number is written. In my experience it was standard to
use India Ink, which is a water base and would not be
effected by the acetone.
You should try acetone on one specimen to see if it
will do the job. Start slowly and use it sparingly
until you see how it goes. Good luck.
