My name is Laura Sampson and I am a 2nd year grad student in the Arts and Administration program at the University of Oregon.
Currently, I am begining work on my Master's Project which involves cataloging and classifying a basketry collection.
I am wondering if there is a standardized nomenclature/object name list for basketry. According to Chenhall's
nomeclature book, basket is not an object name...a basket is a type of unclassified container. This system can prove difficult
when attempting to classify and categorize a large collection of baskets. Is there a standardized list for naming baskets?
For example, is there a list the specifies when a basket is a vase, pot, bowl, plate, etc.? Any advice, contact names, or suggested
books would be much appreciated. I have never worked with basketry before so this is completely new territory for me.
Thank you all for your help!
Laura Sampson
