One small suggestion.

Don't over look information from the whaling and slaughter house
business. And the knife making business uses bone and antler in handles
and would have some information on how to preserve it.

Baleen once had many commercial uses and must have been treated to last.

Sorry if this seems of topic but some of these people did and do know
about this so why not use it.
