I agree with Mr. Kane's observation. I just returned from consulting
for a prominent art museum on the east coast in the planning stages of a
major renovation. I sensed the architects had been put through a year
of torture called..."the museum meeting". Some architects are very
clear about designing something to make a statement...at the expense of
function. However, I've found most want to design something to please
their clients. It is up to the clients to define the needs to be met by
the new design.
Most museum meetings I've attended, as a consultant for architectural
planning, have profesionals from very different areas of the
museum...all with very different concerns and perspectives on
priorities. The end result, due to designing by committee and limited
resources, seems to be a lukewarm rendition of the ideal fix.
