This post came up earlier this month, but my response never made it to
the list...
Monica,
Unfortunately, jobs in museums are few and far between here in our
nations capitol. With The George Washington University putting out
appox. 30+ graduates a year, many looking to stay in the D.C. area,
the market is extremely competitive for even the lowest paying of
museum jobs. Most jobs depend on who you know. Trust me... I've been
looking for a good three years now and I know others who have been
looking for much longer.
Anyway... my suggestions are to look in the same places you would go
to look for jobs anywhere in the country -- the newspaper, www, Aviso,
and Museum-L. The Washington Post has a good search engine of their
job ads (www.washingtonpost.com -- click on Career Post in the
classifieds). Another suggestion is the Smithsonian Institution
(jobline is (202) 287-3102 -- unfortunately the Smithsonian does not
yet post jobs on their web site). Finally, you will want to check out
the Office of Personnel Management's web site called USA Jobs. This
is the site to go to for Federal job postings. Jobs with the National
Park Service (which is in the midst of a hiring freeze), Institute of
Museum & Library Services, National Endowments of Arts and Humanities,
U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, and some Smithsonian jobs (not all
since the Smithsonian has both Federal and non-Federal jobs) are
posted on this searchable site.
Good luck! If you get any other suggestions for finding a job in D.C.
-- let me know.
