In response to the posts by recent museum studies grads who believe that
their programs of study were "intellectually lightweight"...
I'm inclined to wonder if perhaps these individuals chose the wrong
program. After all "museum studies" programs, like museums themselves, are
quite diverse. Rather than categorically dismissing the whole discipline,
as Ross Weeks seems bent on doing, I think this discussion would be better
served by pointing to specific deficiencies
I graduated in May from George Washington U's museum studies program, and
I am very satisfied with my education. The program and degree helped me
land a job doing exactly what I want to do - but that's not the only
reason I'm satisfied. The program also enriched my life. Yes, I said
enriched. Then again, grad school is what you make of it. Teachers can
only really challenge you to a certain extent. The rest is up to you.
