Yes, Ross is correct: we *did* just go through this a few weeks back. I
seem to recall the consensus opinion was: all three (though the three in
that discussion were, I believe, "collection, preservation, and
education"). All three are legitimate. All three are important, even
crucial. Take away any one, and you no longer have a "museum" in the
commonly (if vaguely) understood sense of the word.
