In terms of new ideas, I recently purchased a Plustek OpticPro and
found, to my considerable surprise, that it does a quite credible
job of digitizing three-dimensional objects as long as the field is
not too deep. For an example, take a look at
<http://www.utep.edu/leb/mammal/taxa/taxa006.htm>, which shows
(downpage a bit) a ventral view of a Mountain Beaver skull.
