Catalina Island Museum
POSITION OPENING
Collections Inventory Assistant
The Catalina Island Museum is pleased to announce an opening for a
full-time, one-year position as a Collections Inventory Assistant.
There is a possibility that the assistant will be considered for the
position of Collections Manager at the end of the one-year project.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Collections Inventory Assistant will
be responsible for an inventory of the museum’s historical collections
and a move of many of the artifacts into an improved storage space.
This will include a shelf-by-shelf physical inventory combined with
records checks and data entry into our collections management software.
Approximately one day a week will be devoted to processing incoming
collections (preparation of deeds of gift, donor correspondence, object
numbering, computer cataloging, storage of accessioned items). The
assistant will also be expected to occasionally assist with special
museum events (lectures, fundraisers, etc.). The Collections Inventory
Assistant will report to the Deputy Director/Collections Manager.
Qualifications: We are looking for a person who is detail-oriented and
self-motivated, with excellent organizational skills, energy,
enthusiasm, and a sense of humor. Ability to work both as part of a
team and on his/her own. Computer skills are a must (IBM desktop
systems, Windows, MS Word/Office, Foxpro 2.6 or similar database
systems), computer hardware knowledge a plus. BA in related field is
required; MA in Museum Studies or related field preferred.
The Museum: The Catalina Island Museum is located in Avalon, in the
historic Casino Building, on beautiful Santa Catalina Island. It is a
small, local museum dedicated to presenting and preserving the cultural
history of Santa Catalina Island to mainland visitors and local
community members. Our collections include a large collection of
archaeological materials, a growing collection of ephemera and
photographs, and a wide variety of historical artifacts representing our
local maritime history, tourist industry, sportfishing, local aviation
history, etc. We offer a variety of educational programming including
lectures, special events, historic house tours, museum tours and classes
for schoolchildren. We have five full-time and two part-time staff.
Santa Catalina Island: The island is one of the eight California Channel
Islands and the only one with a permanent, year-round resident
population. Avalon, the island’s only city, is home to over 3,500
residents. The island is approximately one hour from Los Angeles.
Frequent boats and helicopters provide transportation service. It is
not possible to bring a car to the Island, however, Avalon is easily
accessible by walking and biking as it is only one square mile in size.
Catalina has many outdoor activities to offer: excellent scuba diving,
snorkeling, hiking and camping, horseback riding, golfing, tennis,
fishing, and kayaking, to name a few. The climate is moderate, seldom
exceeding 80 degrees F in summer or below 50 in winter. Avalon’s
community is friendly and busy and offers residents a wide variety of
activities, ranging from volunteering for any number of service groups
to attending our annual music festivals (blues, country and jazz).
Salary and Benefits: $17,680 annual pay for one-year, full-time position
(40 hrs/wk). Group health insurance.
Starting Date: August 1998 preferred.
To apply: Send a resume, cover letter and the names of three academic
and/or professional references to: Stacey Otte, Deputy
Director/Collections Manager, Catalina Island Museum, PO Box 366,
Avalon, CA 90704, (310) 510-2414 (or e-mail [log in to unmask]) by
