Position Available: EXHIBIT DEVELOPER

The Cranbrook Institute of Science seeks a creative, self-starting,
focused person to guide exhibit teams through the development of two new
natural history exhibits scheduled to open in the fall of 1999. Part of
the Cranbrook Educational Community, the Institute of Science is a small
natural history museum, reinventing itself from the inside out,
incorporating science center techniques to develop a museum environment
that is visually exciting, educationally rich and rooted in the
Institute’s rich and varied collection.  Four new, 2,000 - 3,000 sq ft
exhibits constitute the second and final phase of the Institute’s
innovative expansion project. Our youthful and energetic Exhibit Group
is forging new ground in museum aesthetic and the merger of traditional
natural history exhibits and interactivity.  Cranbrook offers a
competitive salary and a comprehensive benefits package. Successful
candidates will have experience in: fast-track exhibitions development;
working with graphic and 3-D designers, scientists, and educators; and
writing labels. Prototyping and evaluation experience a plus.
Background in earth or physical sciences is desirable.

DUTIES:

* Conduct content research for two natural history exhibits.

* Collaborate with all team members to develop exhibit ideas,
participate in creative problem solving.

* Translate product of team collaboration into an exhibit outline, main
messages, and final label copy.

* Conduct informal formative evaluation for exhibit components and label
copy.

* Ensure scientific accuracy of all exhibit components, labels, and
graphics.

* Manage day to day operations of two exhibit teams, including
administrative duties and budgeting.

* Track and document team progress.

REQUIREMENTS:

* Experience developing at least one museum exhibition.

* Bachelor’s Degree in natural science, education, or related field.

* Excellent research, organization, and writing/editing skills.

* Interest in natural history and science.

* Ability to orchestrate several tasks simultaneously, and to work
independently.

* Ability to adhere to deadlines.

* Ability to anticipate possible problems and to offer creative
solutions.

* Excellent interpersonal skills.

* Familiarity with word processing, databases, and spreadsheets in Mac
environment.
