There is a Sci-Fi short story about wire hangers being part of a life cycle
of some strange organism that's visiting earth. Paper clips (the egg), wire
hangers (the larva) and old broken down bicycles (the adult stage). It
answers the question of how come you see loads of paperclips in your desk
and then there aren't any. Your closet is full of wire hangers and then
they're( thanks David) all gone. You see lots of abandon bicycles and then
they all disappear. I don't recall the name of the piece or the author. I
do believe it was included in the Hugo Awards.

P.S. the scene from "Mommie Dearest" would be kinda neat for a film clip.
