We are exploring the possibility of making all or a portion of our quarterly
journal available on the Web. But since it is one of the major benefits of
membership and is expensive to print and mail, we are concerned that by making
it available on the Web, the organization could lose membership revenue (if
one of the reasons you’re joining is to get the publication) while still
incurring significant costs to produce the publication. We would like to make
the content of the publication more available to students, schools for
research, etc., but can’t afford to give it away. 

Have any museums or related nonprofit organizations had experience with this
kind of transition?

I have been told that members can be issued a pass code for access to the
publication - any organizations  do this? Any idea how many of your members
read it on the Web as opposed to the traditional printed piece?
