JOB DESCRIPTION
JOB TITLE: Curator of Costumes and Textiles
SUPERVISOR: Curator of Collections
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Responsible for the care and interpretation of costumes and textiles belonging to or on loan to
SDHS.
Makes recommendations for acquisition, deaccession, and authentication of the above.
Does research on the collection and publishes the results of that research.
Trains and supervises volunteers, interns, and docents for collections/exhibition projects and
collection care.
Establishes and oversees policy and procedures for curation, management, access, handling,
record keeping and conservation, based on accepted museum standards.
Monitors collections for conservation needs and sets priorities.
Serves as liaison to the Costume Council, an SDHS Auxiliary.
Implements lectures, tours, and special events for CC members.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Advanced degree in fine arts, history, museum studies, or other relevant field.
Knowledge of conservation methods for costumes and textiles.
Minimum of three years demonstrated work experience in a museum setting.
Knowledge of required support services: acquisitions, processing, reference, budgets, and
administration.
Ability to utilize computers in collections processing and record keeping.
Experience with developing museum exhibits and/or interpretive programs.
